MARLBORO, N.Y. – In the collegiate debut for the Mount Saint Mary College women’s lacrosse program, freshman Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) scored ten times to lead the Knights to a 17-15 victory over Cazenovia College. Mount Saint Mary moved to 1-0, while Cazenovia dropped to 0-1.

Spadaro scored five times in the first half, including a goal right before the half that tied the game at 10-10. Spadaro also gave the Knights their first lead of the contest, netting an unassisted tally at the 17:57 mark to give her team a 4-3 advantage.

Out of the gates in the second half, Mount Saint Mary ripped off the first five goals to seize control of the game. Freshman Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) kicked things off by converting a free position attempt at the 27:23 mark. Spadaro followed up with another free position goal at 26:05, and then found the back of the net again at the 22:17 mark to make it 13-10. Junior Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) continued the run at the 20:14 mark, putting home a feed from Spadaro. Then, it was freshman Katie Gerdts (Forest Hills, N.Y.) who found Spadaro for another goal that made it 15-10.

Cazenovia edged to within two in the closing minutes, as back-to-back tallies from senior Courtney Caldwell (Black River, N.Y.) made the score, 17-15. Mount Saint Mary did a nice job of possessing the ball in the final two minutes, however, allowing them to earn the first win in program history.

Spadaro finished with 10 goals, 3 assists, and 6 groundballs. Cranwell totaled 5 goals and a team-high 7 groundballs, while Cashin netted 2 goals to go along with 3 groundballs. Sophomore goalie Emily Folino (Staten Island, N.Y.) did an excellent job in the cage, making 14 stops to collect the victory. Sophomore Julianne LoStrappo (Seaford, N.Y.) totaled five draw controls and did a nice job at the defensive end of the field.

For the Wildcats, sophomore Christy Foster (Canton, N.Y.) scored a team-high 6 goals. Caldwell finished with 5 goals and 4 assists, while junior Cassandra Gazeley (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) pitched in a goal and 2 assists. Freshman Liz Cook (Bernhards Bay, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the loss.

The Knights continue their inaugural campaign on Monday, March 15. They’ll host Westfield State College at Marlboro High School starting at 7:00 p.m.
