Six Named to Skyline All-Conference; McCrea Named Top Rookie
Dan McCrea / Matt Germann
NEWBURGH, NY – Six members of the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team were named to the Skyline Conference all-conference teams in an announcement made Monday evening. The Blue Knights placed three players on the first team, three players on the second team, and freshman Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) was also honored as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year.

McCrea, a versatile player who also collected a second team selection as a utility player, closed out the 2009 season with a record of 5-0 on the mound. In seven starts, McCrea posted a team-best earned run average of 3.21 and allowed just 37 hits in 42 innings of work. He hurled two complete games, one of which was a shutout of Maritime College. Also playing the outfield and the corner infield positions, the freshman posted a batting average of .313 with 21 runs scored and 21 runs batted in.

Senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.), a first team selection at second base, finished the season with a batting average of .403, a team-best slugging percentage of .639, and a team-best on-base percentage of .500. The senior totaled 51 runs scored, 48 runs batted in, 15 doubles, and was also a perfect 20-for-20 in stolen bases. He finished the season among the top three in the Skyline Conference in every major offensive category.

Junior Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.), who collected an all-conference selection in the outfield, led the team in batting average at .403. He also led the team in runs scored (54), hits (61), and stolen bases, a category in which he was a perfect 27-for-27. The junior led the Skyline in runs scored and stolen bases and was also among the leaders in batting average and on-base percentage (.491). Also an excellent defensive player, Umphlett racked up six outfield assists during the season.

Sophomore Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.), the first team catcher, finished the season with a batting average of .394. He tied for the team lead in hits with 61 and led the Blue Knights in total bases with 95. His slugging percentage of .613 placed him second on the team and among the top five in the Skyline Conference. Peisel, who totaled 41 runs and 45 runs batted in, also belted a team-high five home runs.

Senior pitcher Michael Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y.) closed out a fine career with his second consecutive selection to the Skyline Conference second team. Redmond was 6-3 with an earned run average of 3.25. He allowed just 49 hits in his team-high 55.1 innings pitched and struck out 35 batters. Unfortunately, a gradual decline in the health of his shoulder derailed what could have been a phenomenal season.

Senior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) finished his Mount career with a second team selection at third base, his first ever all-conference appearance. Germann batted .304 with 33 runs scored and 41 runs batted in. The senior collected 19 walks and closed the season with an on-base percentage of .391. The vocal leader of the Blue Knights and a team captain, Germann also contributed defensively, committing just six errors in 37 games at the hot corner.
