Visconti Named First Team All-Region; Peisel and Umphlett on Second Team

NEWBURGH, NY – The awards continue to roll in for the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team, as three members of the team were named to the all-region teams for the ABCA New York Region. Senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) was named to the first team at second base, while junior outfielder Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) and sophomore catcher Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) were named to the second team.

Visconti, also a Skyline Conference first team selection, finished the season with a batting average of .403, a team-best slugging percentage of .639, and a team-best on-base percentage of .500. The senior totaled 51 runs scored, 48 runs batted in, 15 doubles, and was also a perfect 20-for-20 in stolen bases. He finished the season among the top three in the Skyline Conference in every major offensive category.

Umphlett, also a Skyline Conference first team selection, led the team in batting average at .407. He also led the team in runs scored (54), hits (61), and stolen bases, a category in which he was a perfect 27-for-27. The junior led the Skyline in runs scored and stolen bases and was also among the leaders in batting average and on-base percentage (.491). Also an excellent defensive player, Umphlett racked up six outfield assists during the season.

Peisel, the Skyline first team catcher,finished the season with a batting average of .394. He tied for the team lead in hits with 61 and led the Blue Knights in total bases with 95. His slugging percentage of .613 placed him second on the team and among the top five in the Skyline Conference. Peisel, who totaled 41 runs and 45 runs batted in, also belted a team-high five home runs.

Visconti’s selection was the second first-team selection for the Mount in as many years. Chris Schacca, who graduated in 2008, was named to the first team as a catcher in 2008. The three all-region selections are the most for the Blue Knights since 2003.

Matt Prescia
Baseball
Freshman Matt Prescia batted .412 with six runs scored and five runs batted in during the Skyline Conference tournament.  In an extra-inning game against St. Joseph's College, Prescia's two-run single in the top of the eleventh proved to be the difference as the Knights advanced with a 7-5 victory.  The freshman finished with seven hits in the tournament, including at least one in each game.
Christine DelPiano
Softball
Senior Christine DelPiano batted .400 and slugged 1.000 during the Skyline Conference tournament.  During a 7-6 victory over Old Westbury in a loser's bracket game, DelPiano was 2-for-4 with a pair of two-run homers.  Her two-out, seventh inning blast saved the Knights from elimination.  DelPiano recorded at least one hit in all three games.
